The Southern Ocean is home to the most extraordinary ocean current on our planet. The Antarctic Circumpolar Current. This current prevents warm water from getting too close to Antarctica, keeping the ice sheet intact. Peter Bijl, Earth scientist at Utrecht University, tries to solve the mystery of the apparent high temperatures on Antarctica 34-56 million years ago, when the Antarctic shorelines were covered with lush green forests.
